‘Although I was a prisoner [at Robben Island] for seven years, I also started working there when they opened [it] as a museum. So I had lots of time association with Robben Island not as a place of banishment but as a place of learning, of education, of bringing people together.’ Lionel Davis (b. 1936)
‘Reclamation’ is a self-portrait by South African artist and former political prisoner Lionel Davis. Through integrating maps of District Six and Robben Island, as well as poetry into his self-portrait, Davis’ work speaks of his personal, as well as the collective need to reclaim not only the self but also the many physical things stolen by apartheid.
