Skaftien – Your Chance to Fill a Lunchbox

21 September 2011 by Alan

Organisers of SKAFTIEN will once again host their unique fundraising event on Sunday September 25 at Guga S’Thebe, KwaLanga. SKAFTIEN, which means ‘lunchbox’, was born out of an idea to creatively raise money through performances and crowd engagement for community organisations.

It was started by a group of young adults in Johannesburg before reaching Cape Town’s shores in May this year. This first event raised R6 000 for the Red, Green and Gold community run crèche in Philippi which used the funds to build a much needed roof for the crèche. It is following this success, that organisers saw fit to create another opportunity to help better communities.

At each SKAFTIEN event, attendees purchase a R60 ticket for which they get a meal and an assortment of live music and dance performances. Between performances the audience is presented with proposals for creative community-based projects that need funding following which they cast a vote for their favourite project. The winning project is awarded a grant from the proceeds of the event.

An exciting performer line up is confirmed for the event and includes DJ Dathini Mzayiya; Plan Be, which includes vocalist Sakhile Moleshe of Gold Fish fame; Bokani Dyer, pianist and 2011 Standard Bank Young Artist of the year winner; Sisonke Xonti, tenor saxophonist; DAT, hip hop artist; Buli, a poet and vocalist and Nomthunzi Mashalaba, a visual artist. All these artists have contributed their time and skills at no cost to the SKAFTIEN event.

Tickets cost R60 and will be available at the door. Additional ticket information can be sourced on the Skaftien Facebook page: www.facebook.com/skaftienkaapstad  The event will take place at Guga S’Thebe, KwaLanga at the Corner of Washington and Church Street in Langa, Cape Town on Sunday 25 September from 12h00 to 15h00.
