The DA in the Western Cape condemns the recent attacks on drivers of e-haling services. It is alleged that taxi drivers in several areas have demanded so-called protection money in order for e-hailing drivers to operate in given areas.
This has been cast into the spotlight following an e-hailing cab service driver being shot and killed and his passenger wounded in Vrygrond, near Muizenberg, at the weekend. A further four shooting incidents were recorded last week where two e-hailing drivers were killed and two are in critical condition.
MPP Daylin Mitchell said: “The alleged protection money order demanded by taxi drivers is of grave concern as it highlights that some transport operators believe they are above the law. Innocent residents have the right to feel safe without fearing for their lives when simply utilising a transport service. Furthermore, all e-hailing services have the right to operate within the province without harm.”
Reports have also been circulated that e-hailing services have reported such incidents but have allegedly been dismissed by SAPS. SAPS spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said they had no record of the alleged incidents that taxis were demanding money.
MPP Mitchell added: “It is the duty of SAPS and all law enforcement officials to ensure the safety of all residents, foreign or domestic, as they have the right to live and work.
I call on all branches of SAPS and Law enforcement to investigate these incidences and ensure safety of all residents as well as e-hailing services by following up on reports submitted. We must bring an end to the violence towards those operating in the e-hailing.”
It remains the priority of the DA in the Western Cape that all residents as well as their livelihoods remain safe and are protected without fear from outside influences.
