Witnesses say one protestor aligned to a militant Muslim anti-drug movement was killed in clashes with police at a South African top tourist attraction in Cape Town.
The trouble started when demonstrators from the People Against Gangsterism And Drugs, PAGAD, gathered at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront – a tourist attraction featuring shops and restaurants.
Around five-thousand PAGAD protestors gathered at the Waterfront – home to restaurants and shops – to demonstrate against drug barons who continue their trade.
Police told protestors they were acting illegally as they were on private property and gave them ten minutes to leave.
When demonstrators failed to clear the area, heavily-armed police in riot gear moved in to break up the crowd.
Protestors fought back with a hail of bottles.
In turn, police fired rubber bullets.
In the ensuing chaos, one person was reportedly killed and another 20 injured.
One man, whose wife was shot in the dead, threatened retribution.

Crowds of vigilantes threatening to kill drugs barons who refuse to stop trading have repeatedly clashed with police during marches on the homes of alleged drugs dealers.
A-P-T-V captured vigilantes on film beating and setting fire to one such man earlier in August – it was this attack which thrust PAGAD into the limelight.
