South African President elect Nelson Mandela this morning attended
a service at the Sea Point Synagogue outside Cape Town. Addressing
several hundred people outside the synagogue after a hour long
service Mr Mandela paid tribute to the Jewish community for their
role in the struggle against apartheid. He said the anc would
give priority to uplifting the plight of the african, indian and
coloured community. In a rare scene members of the Jewish
community sang praises to Mr Mandela and shouted “one mandela, one
president”.
