The City of Cape Town wants to inform residents and visitors that one of the copes along the Strand seawall access ramp has become dislodged, and as a result this section has been fenced off in the interest of public safety and security.
One of the copes along the Strand seawall access ramp has become dislodged and fell onto the beach due to corrosion of the internal reinforced anchor bars.
Copes that are exposed to high tide such as the ones along the seaward side of the access ramps have reduced weight retention at high tide due to the increased buoyancy created by the water. Given the increased buoyancy and when the anchor steel has corroded, the cope can be dislodged and fall, as is the case at this access ramp.
The City’s Coastal Management branch is busy installing a ready-fence along the beach side of the impacted area that is directly across from Burnard Street. This is a precautionary measure in the interest of public safety and security. Processes to repair and check the remaining cope structures along the access ramp have been initiated.
We apologise for any inconvenience and kindly request the public to avoid this area until the repairs have been done. There are multiple access points down to the beach and request that the public use those until further notice.
One of the copes along the Strand seawall access ramp directly across Burnard Street has become dislodged. The public is advised to use one of the other access points to reach the beach.
