About 35 Norwegian students at UCT – many of whom had arrived here just a week ago on the semester-abroad programme – gathered on Jammie Plaza at noon on Monday, 25 July, for a minute’s silence to remember the victims of the attacks in Norway last Friday. In so doing, the students joined millions of their compatriots who, thousands of miles away but at the same time, were doing likewise.
“It’s quite absurd being down here and watching it on CNN and listening to it on radio by internet,” said student Tim Sørensen. “You’ve seen all those terrorist attacks in New York, but suddenly it’s your own country – and you aren’t a part of it, but you’re still a part of it.”
Deputy vice-chancellor Professor Thandabantu Nhlapo joined the Norwegian students at their noon gathering.
