At 16h07 on Friday 6 January 2012, NSRI Melkbosstrand volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of a suspected drowning in progress at Melkbosstrand Beach.
It appears that a 19 year old male, from Atlantis, is reported to have suffered a seizure (epileptic seizure) while swimming. An unidentified man on a jet-ski and local lifeguards rescued the teenager from the water.
On arrival on-scene NSRI medics commenced treatment on the semi-conscious male and he was brought to the medical room at NSRI Melkbosstrand rescue base where treatment, for a seizure, continued. (The teenager did not show any signs or symptoms of near drowning).
Metro EMS were summoned and the man has been transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition by Metro EMS ambulance and he is being treated for a seizure.
The teenagers mother, who was with him at the beach at the time, accompanied her son to hospital.
