Suspects Detained for Unlawful Possession of Firearms and Ammunition and Dealing in Cannabis

WESTERN CAPE – Continued efforts by police members to eradicate the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as dealing in cannabis proved to be successful when three males aged 27, 37 and 69 were arrested in isolated incidents.

Police members from Operation Restore conducted a focus operation on Thursday 10 October 2024. The members approached a home in York Road, Sherwood Park, searched the premises and in the process confiscated a consignment of cannabis with an estimated street value of R300 000 and cash. They arrested a 37-year-old man on a charge of dealing in cannabis.

In an unrelated intervention police member attached to the Anti-Gang unit conducted stop and searches in Manenberg policing precinct on Thursday 10 October 2024. When the members entered Junction Peak Road in Heideveld, they approached a suspicious man, searched him and recovered a .38 special revolver found in his possession. They detained the 27 year old man for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

In an unrelated incident Swellendam Police were busy interviewing a complainant in the community service centre on Friday 11 October 2024 when she informed the police member that the she feared for her life. She indicated that the suspect who was in fact with her was in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The police member searched the suspect and ultimately continued to search the motor vehicle. They recovered a pistol with ammunition between the luggage. They detained the 69 year old man for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Athlone and Swellendam Magistrates’ courts on the mentioned charges.
