Teenagers Assisted After Getting Into Difficulty on Sea-kayak

10 July 2026 by Con Tributor

Neil de Vries, NSRI Hermanus duty coxswain, said: At 10h29, Wednesday, 8 July, NSRI Hermanus duty crew were activated following eyewitness reports of 2 males appearing to be in distress on a sea-kayak offshore of Hardebaai, Onrus.

NSRI rescue swimmers responded towards the scene while our duty crew responded to our NSRI Hermanus station 17 rescue base to prepare to launch a rescue craft.

On our rescue swimmers arriving on the scene we found 2 local male teenagers swimming towards the shore and their double sea-kayak was capsized and floating offshore.

They reached the shoreline without assistance, reaching rocks on the shoreline, where NSRI crew reached them on the rocks and assisted them ashore.

Both local teenagers, aged 17, were wearing life-jackets. They were a bit cold from the swim but uninjured they required no medical care.

They were taken home by family where they warmed up.

Their sea-kayak drifted ashore and NSRI recovered the sea-kayak which we took to their home.

The family have thanked NSRI for the assistance and for recovering their sea-kayak.

NSRI has commended the eyewitness for raising the alarm.
