Temporary Night Roadworks on Jakes Gerwel Drive

17 July 2026 by Con Tributor

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate advises residents and road users of temporary night-time roadworks linked to the ongoing rehabilitation of Jakes Gerwel Drive at the intersection with Voortrekker Road. The planned night work will take place from 18:00 on Sunday, 19 July 2026, until 06:00 on Monday, 20 July 2026. However, lane closures will remain in place until no later than 22:00 on Monday, 20 July 2026, to allow the newly laid asphalt sufficient time to cure before being reopened to traffic.

‘As many residents will know, rehabilitation work on Jakes Gerwel Drive is currently under way as part of the City’s commitment to keep Cape Town moving and improving this important route. To reduce the impact on traffic during the day, our teams will carry out night-time work from Sunday evening into Monday. The intersection of Voortrekker Road and Jakes Gerwel Drive will remain open in all directions, with only a lane reduction in place while work is under way,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The work will include asphalt repairs at the Jakes Gerwel Drive and Voortrekker Road intersection. Traffic will remain open in all directions, with lane reductions implemented where required.

Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, allow additional travel time, and follow the temporary traffic arrangements and signage in place.

The City apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks residents and road users for their cooperation and patience as these important road infrastructure upgrades continue.
