TOKARA shoots the lights out with four 2021 Platter’s 5-star wines

TOKARA shoots the lights out with four 2021 Platter’s 5-star wines: TOKARA’s triumphant year with a spate of Top 10 accolades across their range of top tier wines, has culminated with no less than four 5-star wines in the definitive 2021 Platter’s South African Wine Guide.

The TOKARA 5-star quartet are the flagship Director’s Reserve Red and the Reserve Collection Cabernet Sauvignon, both from the standout 2017 vintage, as well as the Reserve Collection Elgin Sauvignon Blanc and the Limited Release Noble Late Harvest from the 2019 vintage. Each of these four wines also boasts a Platter’s 5-star rating for previous vintages.

“After a challenging yet very rewarding year with five Top 10 winners, our four Platter’s 5-star wines are the cherry on top for the Ferreira family and our talented winemaking team headed by Stuart Botha in the cellar and Aidan Morton in the vineyards,” says GM Karl Lambour.

The forward thinking vision of owners GT and Anne-Marie Ferreira, has seen their vineyards consistently produce exceptional, award winning wines over more than 20 vintages.

“Cabernet Sauvignon is a significant TOKARA cornerstone which makes it particularly fitting that our Cabernet driven Director’s Reserve Red and our Reserve Collection Cabernet Sauvignon both received 5-stars again this year,” adds Lambour.

Since its maiden 2003 vintage, the Director’s Reserve Red has grown in stature as a world class Bordeaux-style blend from Stellenbosch, representing everything TOKARA stands for – refinement, elegance and balance. The Reserve Collection Cabernet Sauvignon is a true expression of TOKARA’s prized vineyard blocks on the slopes of the Simonsberg.

“Cabernet Sauvignon is King when it comes to red grapes in Stellenbosch. The marriage between the variety and the TOKARA site is where the magic really begins,” says winemaker Stuart Botha of this vibrant, richly textured wine with layers of flavour and a long, persistent finish.

TOKARA’s two Platter’s 5-star white showstoppers are both crafted from the same Sauvignon blanc vineyard on TOKARA’s Highlands farm in Elgin, an area producing some of the best cool climate renditions of this grape variety with fresh acidity and purity of fruit in perfect balance.

The Reserve Collection Elgin Sauvignon Blanc 2019 shows exquisite aromatic diversity led by passion fruit and blackcurrant leaf subtly interplayed with lemongrass and elderflower. There is freshness as the wine enters the palate, with zesty grapefruit flavours leading to a creamy mid-palate and a refreshing finish.

The Limited Release Noble Late Harvest 2019 is awe-inspiring in perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. It teems with honey, dried fig and apricot underscored by spicy notes typical of botrytised grapes and ends in an exceptionally appealing dry finish.

At TOKARA, nothing is left to chance. “The mantra has always been one of no shortcuts – no compromise. From the very beginning TOKARA aimed at an international style with a distinct South African identity – an ambition to create something that would be recognised as timeless,” concludes Lambour.
