If reducing your carbon footprint is high on your priority list, green driving is a no-brainer. Driving is not only a matter of road safety, but also environmental safety! Making the smallest of changes will reduce carbon emissions and make a huge difference.
Ian Kaplan, owner of Speedy Cape Town, is an expert when it comes to all things car related. Here’s a few eco-friendly driving tips he reckons you should follow:
Improve your driving technique: Avoid accelerating and stopping suddenly (driving is NOT a computer game). If you pull away too fast, you use up to 60% more petrol!
Service your car regularly: To ensure engine efficiency, diligently stick to the manufacturer’s servicing schedule. The guys at Speedy Cape Town are fully equipped to take care of all your vehicle’s repairs and replacements.
Get in gear: You can save up to 15% fuel if you keep them revs between 1 500 and 2000 rpm. Plus, avoid unnecessary revving – it increases harmful tailpipe emissions and also wastes fuel. And, trust us, it’s not as cool as you think.
Turn your car off in traffic jams: Switch your engine off when you’re stuck in traffic for more than a couple of minutes. You’ll save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions.
Leave your baggage behind: The heavier your car, the more petrol you use. Duh.
Watch your speed: Carbon emissions are lowest when you drive between 80 and 90 kph. Did you know that driving at a speed lower than 25 kph means that you cause more pollution? We’re not giving you a free pass for speeding, though.
Remember that the way you drive is just as important as what you drive! And don’t forget to head over to Speedy Cape Town for all your vehicle maintenance needs.
