I welcome the start of Transport Month today, 1 October 2020. The month reinforces the importance of realising safe, efficient public transport as the economy continues to safely reopen.
Provincial Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela recently announced resolutions drafted by the department in conjunction with CATA and SANTACO taxi associations as part of efforts to curb taxi violence and related murders. These are welcome developments as we kick-start transport month, and as Chairperson of the Transport & Public Works Committee in the province, I remain dedicated to effective oversight of such programmes.
I have recently also conveyed the safety of transport infrastructure and users through questions asked to the provincial minister on trains in the province and the plans to combat the downfall of this transport option. The rail agency suffers under extensive theft and vandalism which must end, as it is an exceptionally vital method of transport for residents.
The province’s Red Dot initiative is an example of how partnership between government and the transport industry can contribute to getting residents to and from workplaces on time and safely. We’ve seen more than 12,000 healthcare workers enjoy the benefits of this service during lockdown. And I look forward to a response from the department on the parliamentary question put forward with regards to the extension of this service and the key lessons learnt.
The DA in the Western Cape remains committed to creating a safer and reliable transport environment for all residents within the province.
