Die Burger and the Rise of Afrikaans Media: First published in July 1915 under the Dutch title De Burger, Die Burger was established by a group of prominent Afrikaner figures and published by Naspers (then De Nasionale Pers). With its original editor D.F. Malan—who later became Prime Minister of South Africa—the paper played a central political role in the 20th century. It transitioned to Afrikaans in the early 1920s and grew to become the largest Afrikaans daily in the country. Today, it remains a dominant media voice in the Western Cape.
