The removal of firearms in the hands of criminals yielded success on Monday, 05 October 2026, during crime prevention initiatives in Hanover Park.
Members of the Anti-Gang Unit conducted an intelligence driven operation when they heard gunshots in the nearby vicinity. They followed the sound of the gunshots and saw a suspect running on an open field in Helman Walk. They chased after the suspect, apprehended and searched him and found a 9mm pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition in his possession. He faces charges for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The 32-year-old suspect will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ court once he has been charged.
Anti-Gang Unit members searched a premises in Geneva Place, Hanover Park, where they found a 9mm pistol without a serial number with 32 rounds of ammunition hidden in a cupboard. A 17-year-old male was arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
He is expected to make a court appearance in the Athlone Magistrates court today, 06 October 2026 for the mentioned charge.
