UCT Libraries celebrated South African Library Week in style this year by hosting a reading session and unveiling a new electronic resource.
They also called on staff and students to join them in supporting the Equal Education movement’s “One school, one library, one librarian” campaign by signing their petition or donating books for rural and township libraries. There are collection points in the Chancellor Oppenheimer Library, the Law Library and the Health Sciences Library.
South African Library Week 2010 ran from 22 to 27 March, its theme “Reading Changes Lives”.
In UCT Libraries’ reading session, Alex D’Angelo enraptured his audience when he read some of his published children stories. These include stories he wrote for the collection Madiba Magic: Nelson Mandela’s Favourite Stories for Children, and from his book, Asmodeus, a humorous book on a junior and rather lazy sort of devil dispatched to the Olde Cape to establish a regional branch of Hell.
On 26 March, Caroline Dean, electronic resources librarian, revealed a new online resource that UCT Libraries has acquired for 2010. The upgraded packages of online journals, as well as new databases include Project Muse, Sage Journals online, and IEEE/IET Electronic Library.
