Urgent Alert: Increased Shark Activity Close In-shore of False Bay

4 May 2010 by CapeTownNewsReader

The NSRI and Working On Sharks Group are urgently appealing to bathers and paddlers on the False Bay coastline to exercise extreme caution while bathing or paddling due to increased shark activity currently being experienced close inshore.

The sharks are believed to be hunting as a result of increased fish activity close inshore.

Trek fisherman are also trek fishing close inshore along the False Bay Coast and this activity is also believed to attract sharks.

Bathers are asked not to swim too deep but also to preferably not swim at present. Paddlers are asked to exercise extreme caution.

Bathers have been cleared from the water by shark spotters, in Fish Hoek, St James and Muizenberg, on a number of occasions over the past few days after sharks were spotted close inshore near to bathing beaches.

The red flag, warning of increased shark activity, is being flown at beaches along False Bay where shark spotters are in attendance.
