The humming of merry hymns with family and friends on picnic blankets under a starry sky will be the scene on Stellenbosch estate Neethlingshof on Sunday evening, November 27 when it hosts the annual Christmas concert of the University of Stellenbosch Literacy Festival.
The concert is in aid of Words Open Worlds (WOW), a literacy empowerment project aimed at creating learning opportunities for pupils from disadvantaged families.
The programme, compiled by cabaret master Niël Rademan, brings together local artists Jak de Priester, Minette du Toit-Pearce, Nedine Blom, Simangele Mashazi, Andrea Winckler, Camillo Lombard and Riaan Grobler. Niël Rademan and Vicky Davis will entertain the audience between acts, while well-known comedian and actress Dowwe Dolla will add to the fun with her own Christmas story.
The concert starts at 18:30, but those attending are advised to come early to secure their picnic spots. Tickets are available from Computicket at R100 per adult. Students, scholars and children pay R50 only at the gate. Picnic baskets for two, brimful with delicious nibbles and a bottle of Neethlingshof wine, can be pre-booked at Computicket at a cost of R300. No own food parcels, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages will be allowed as these will be available for sale from on-site food stalls and a cash bar. Chairs and picnic blankets will be available for hire, but guests are also welcome to bring their own.
