15 February 2016 by Alan

At 16h31, Sunday, 14th February, NSRI Table Bay duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from the Department of Environmental Affairs and the City of Cape Town to tow a whale carcass, found washed up at Saunders Rocks, Bantry Bay, to Granger Bay for removal for disposal by the City.

The sea rescue craft Spirit of Vodacom and Rotary Endeavor were launched and on arrival on the scene a towline was attached to the whale carcass at low tide and then during high tide, during the high tide swell, the whale carcass was towed off the rocks successfully and towed to Granger Bay’s (OPBC) Oceana Power Boat Club where the City Cleansing Department winched the whale carcass onto a flatbed trailer and the whale carcass will be transported to a disposal site.

This is a Southern Right juvenile male, 8.5 meters in length and approximately 8 to 9 tons. Samples were taken by the Department of Environmental Affairs – Oceans and Coasts.
