In response to a written Parliamentary Question, it has been revealed that the Western Cape’s Department of Human Settlements has established a Covid-19 Task Team and undertaken an extensive re-blocking strategy to support those at high-risk of contracting the virus.
MPP Matlhodi Maseko says: “Our residents living in the informal settlements are exceptionally vulnerable to Covid-19 as it is incredibly difficult to maintain social distancing in such circumstances. For this reason, we welcome the fact that the Western Cape Government is working with residents who reside in informal settlements with a density of more than 100 units per hectare.
The Department has rapidly identified land across the province for the purpose of dedensification. This is part of the project to provide residents with quality housing in a safe environment.”
The Western Cape is the only province in South Africa to have accelerated housing projects during the Covid-19 pandemic. On the other hand, Gauteng for example has underspent its housing budget by R485m.
MPP Maseko adds: “We are encouraged to note that over 6 000 households will benefit from Transitional Residential Units in the coming weeks. These are 2-3 storey structures in Du Noon, Greater Kosovo, and Ithemba.”
In line with our commitment to prioritising the most vulnerable in society, the housing beneficiaries first set to benefit include the elderly, disabled, and backyard dwellers.
MPP Maseko comments: “I look forward to continuing oversight of the housing projects through our Standing Committee as well as visits to the projects themselves for an understanding of the on-the-ground reality.”
The DA in the Western Cape is fully dedicated to providing dignified housing for our people, and acting as a responsive government in light of the pandemic.
