WC finds new ways to collect data to fight Covid-19

3 May 2020 by Con Tributor

The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape welcomes the innovative public transport “quick code” to send data initiative by the Western Cape Department of Transport & Public Works. This USSD code will allow public transport users to send accurate feedback about the adherence of public transportation to the lockdown regulations.

Daylin Mitchell, MPP says: “The public transport quick code is the first of its kind in South Africa. By using this free service, commuters can report whether or not the operator of a vehicle is following regulations, such as providing a clean vehicle with hand sanitiser and a mask for the driver.”

During this Covid-19 crisis, ensuring the continuity of public transport and local mobility services is essential for society and the economy, especially for the many individuals who depend on a well-functioning transportation system and must travel daily to execute their essential services functions.

Daylin Mitchell, MPP adds: “We believe that data can help effectively forecast the development of a given epidemic, and to do that, we need to strengthen our ability to collect important data. It is at times like this that government’s must constantly adapt, finding creative ways to meet needs and forecast trends in order to keep residents safe. The DA in the Western Cape continues to lead the way in this regard.”

Public transport users can access the code by simply dialling *134*234# This service is free of charge from any network.
The DA in the Western Cape remains committed to ensuring that our roads are safe during the national lockdown, as well as the phasing out stages, and that the risk of transmission of Covid-19 is vastly minimised on our roads.
