We welcome and support the great efforts made by the Western Cape Health Department in the rollout of vaccines to residents of the province. According to statistics from the National Department of Health, the province still leads in the percentage of the eligible population vaccinated. At the time of writing, the latest publicly available figures show that the Western Cape has vaccinated 39.40% of the province’s adult population, or 1,961,109 residents. This is followed by the Eastern Cape (35.24%) and Limpopo (34.43%).
In terms of the total number of individuals vaccinated, the Western Cape has vaccinated roughly the same number as Kwa-Zulu Natal, even though KZN’s population is nearly double that of the Western Cape. And while our neighbouring province, the Eastern Cape, has vaccinated slightly over 1,44 million people, we have provided jabs to nearly 2 million residents.
MPP Philander says: “The great progress we are making in vaccinating residents shows this province’s will and determination to keep everyone safe. At the same time, it’s a reminder that vaccinations save lives and offering the very best solution to opening up the economy. We have been talking about balancing lives and livelihoods for a long time, and now we know that vaccines help us strike that balance. They are our key to unlocking the excellent potential in the Western Cape’s economy.
For example, today is World Tourism Day, and with tourism being a critical part of our provincial economy, we have to keep the pressure on national government to move the lockdown alert level to Level 1. We are ready for it and our systems, both economic and health, can sustain this. This also means it is time to remove the State of Disaster, and so we support the Premier’s call and continued efforts in his engagements with the President’s Coordinating Council in this regard.
We want to remind residents that these lifesaving jabs are available, safe, and very effective. More than this, so much depends on each of us receiving these vaccines. They are the way we will build a safer, freer future, and one which opens up so many more opportunities for all of us. Let’s together keep saving lives and supporting one another in reaching population effective protection. Register for your vaccine by dialling *134*832# or call 0860 142 142.
