Through a reply to a Written Question on the level of completion of field hospitals across the country since 1 May 2020, it was revealed that the Western Cape Government is again at the forefront of the fight against Covid-19.
The reply states that 17 field hospitals are in the process of completion which could avail just over 3 600 beds. Three of these field hospitals are in the Western Cape and has availed 1 268 beds, all of which are ready for utilisation. The majority of the remaining beds are still under various levels of completion in other provinces.
MPP Wendy Philander says: ”Although most individuals who contract the coronavirus do not require in-hospital treatment, the lockdown provided sufficient time for provinces to prepare healthcare systems to support patients with the best possible care should it be required. I want to commend the provincial department of health and all its employees for their efforts in ensuring we keep up with the demands of the pandemic.”
Last week Gauteng surpassed the Western Cape and became the new epicentre for Covid-19 in South Africa. At 14 July, along with the Eastern Cape, they have recorded just under 150 000 (54%) of cases in the country with only approximately 700 beds available for utilisation, according to the written reply.
MPP Wendy Philander added: “The Western Cape is currently awaiting the completion of the fourth field hospital in Paarl in the Cape Winelands area, which has been declared a hotpot outside of the metro. I am confident that the provincial department is ready to best serve patients as we reach the peak.”
The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape will use every possible measure to keep residents safe, healthy, and informed.
