The DA in the Western Cape welcomes the provincial Health Department’s plans to increase awareness of Covid-19 safety measures over the festive season. The outcomes of the awareness strategy are, however, dependent on every individual to make safer choices during this time.
MPP Wendy Philander comments: “Covid-19 is a potentially deadly virus and the resurgence of infections in the province is a stark reminder of the great challenges we face together. Our only present defense against the virus is bold behaviour change, especially during the festive period known for social gatherings and celebrations.
The provincial ‘Making Safer Choices’ campaign is part of the Health department’s recovery and reset strategy that aims to keep residents informed of risks and also promotes enforcement of Level 1 regulations. It is targeted at especially vulnerable individuals and communities, as well as businesses through ongoing surveillance and sharing of information. It is also used internally to shield healthcare workers and the system in return.
By working with behavioural specialists and epidemiologists, the province is able to target community-specific messaging and adapt to Covid-19 trends based on data presented. Neither health nor the province works in a silo, however, and so the Western Cape Government closely collaborates across all departments, other spheres of government, and law enforcement bodies to ensure communications and surveillance of risks come together through this evidenced-based approach. Particularly risky behaviour and events are identified and acted upon, both in terms of prevention and proactive responses.
We have submitted questions on the readiness of the provincial government on the safe distribution of the vaccine once available but now for it is imperative that we apply every effort to keep ourselves safe. We remind residents to follow the golden rules of hygiene and avoid the ‘three Cs’: crowded places, close contact settings and confined enclosed spaces.
The Western Cape’s scientifically proven approach calls on every individual to act responsibly towards the greater need of the safe keeping of our own communities as we enter the festive season. The DA supports the campaign and wishes all residents a safe festive season.”
