WCPP To Participate In CPA Africa Region Conference In Nigeria

9 November 2021 by CapeTownNewsReader

The Speaker of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament (WCPP), Hon Masizole Mnqasela, will be leading a small delegation to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Africa Region Conference, from 10-14 November 2021, in Abuja, Nigeria.

The theme of this year’s annual conference is “African Parliaments and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic”. The WCPP is well-positioned to participate and make inputs on this important theme, being a world leader in terms of how it responded to the pandemic. With essentially no interruption to its processes, the WCPP was also one of the very first parliaments in the world to hold virtual sittings and committee meetings.

The Western Cape Provincial Parliament is a sub-national branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Africa Region, and pays annual subscription fees which cover the attendance of their annual conferences.

Besides Speaker Mnqasela, the WCPP will be represented by Hon Lorraine Botha (DA) and Hon Rachel Windvogel (ANC). Hon Botha and Windvogel will also represent the WCPP and the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP), Africa Region meeting that will be held during the main conference. The Secretary to the Provincial Parliament, Mr Romeo Adams, will participate in the parallel conference of the Society of Clerks at the Table.

During the absence of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker Beverley Schäfer will fulfil the role of Speaker.
