Gravity forms is relatively bulletproof when it comes to shrugging off spam submissions (without any additional add-ons like Re-Captcha etc.).

BUT – we recently were hit by a determined set of spam submissions that swamped our forms – irksome to say the least. Scroll down a bit to see the video of how we slowed down and throttled the deluge to a trickle. The premise behind the methods explained in the YouTube How To Video are to ONLY use onsite methods and not rely on outside services like Captcha or Akismet.

Most surprising of all to us was that the spam submissions were mainly from the Netherlands and other Euro based countries and NOT India, China, Russia and those usual suspects.

Of course it could be that spammers from those countries have ‘hijacked’ servers in these European Countries.

Definitions:

ASN: An autonomous system number is a unique identifier that allows an organisation to connect to other organisations and ISPs to be able to send and receive IP addresses which can be further distributed to benefit from resilient, scalable, high-performance Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) connectivity directly to the Internet. It was introduced to regulate how Internet Service Providers (ISP) control routing within their networks and exchange routing information with other parties. Autonomous system numbers can be public or private. Public ASNs are required for systems to exchange information over the Internet. A private ASN can be used instead if a system is communicating solely with a single provider via Border Gateway Protocol (BGP).
