GOOD Statement by Marius van Stade, GOOD Stellenbosch Municipality Councillor:
GOOD Stellenbosch has formally submitted a request to Stellenbosch Municipality for an urgent investigation into the deteriorated condition of the Idas Valley Rugby Clubhouse, a facility that once stood as a proud symbol of sporting excellence, community development, and cultural heritage for the people of Idas Valley.
According to credible reports from the local sports community, an insurance claim was paid out to the Municipality several years ago. Yet, to date, no repair work has been undertaken. This prolonged neglect has sparked deep frustration and disappointment among sports administrators, players, and residents.
Of particular concern is the indignity faced by players from both local and visiting clubs, who are forced to change clothes in public next to the sports fields or inside their vehicles, often in full view of spectators. Players have voiced their unanimous view that this practice violates their dignity and undermines their ability to participate in sport respectfully and safely.
Sports clubs and administrators have further warned that the poor state of the clubhouse is jeopardising opportunities to host major sporting events, attract sponsorships, and welcome higher league fixtures and Western Province Soccer and Rugby matches. These opportunities are being lost because the facility fails to meet basic standards.
GOOD believes that well-maintained sports infrastructure is vital for social cohesion, youth development, and the preservation of local heritage. The continued decay of the Idas Valley Rugby Clubhouse is not just a loss of infrastructure; it is a loss of community pride and dignity.
We therefore call on the Municipality to:
- Launch a full investigation into the status of the insurance claim and the reasons for the delay in repair work.
- Provide a clear timeline for the planned restoration and upgrading of the facility.
- Ensure a transparent and inclusive process that actively involves the Idas Valley community.
We urge the Municipality to treat this matter with the seriousness and urgency it deserves, and to act in the best interests of sports development, community restoration, and the protection of human dignity.
