Pop culture also known as mass culture is what drives society, it is known as beliefs, practices, and objects that dominate a particular geographical area, it is consistent and changes throughout time, this is what sparked an interest in Public Relations to MyPR’s newest intern, Zimkhitha Qulu.
Qulu was born in a small town in the Eastern Cape called Mount Ayliff, completed her foundation and intermediate phases of school in a township called White City situated in Johannesburg – an environment that is remarkably diverse in terms of ethnicity, culture, and style. Zimkhitha has also resided in a rural area, which exposed her to a slightly different algorithm of pop culture to that of a township.
When we look at the ways in which the people from these two societies communicate, it is slightly different. Because culture is different therefore ethics and beliefs are also different, this plays a vital role in effective two-way communication which is what Zimkhitha is enthusiastic about.
Zimkhitha believes that for communication to be effective both parties should be able to participate and there should be no barriers in communication, she believes that the diverse platforms of communications we use in the modern days are art and need to be explored but mostly understood to achieve effective communication.
She believes that social media presence plays a crucial role in an organization and individuals’ success and credibility in a society, therefore, being able to understand how to communicate to a particular audience is vital. She believes in using the art of a variety of languages to converse to accommodate a variety of audiences because this is advantageous to both the person sending the message and the person receiving the message.
Zimkhitha is currently a third-year student at the Nelson Mandela university studying Public Relations management, she believes that embarking on a journey as MyPR’s newest intern will expand her knowledge beyond the Art of communication, introduce her to the practical side of public relations theory that she has been learning at the institution.
Public relations is more than the aspect of communications, she says that it is providing an unbiased interpretation of an event or campaigning to influence public opinion about an organization or public figure.
