Julius Malema: Hiding number one
Last week, Julius Malema reminded me of a school boy who was sent to the principal’s office and had to bend over for six of the best, twice. Afterwards he tried to act brave and kept telling everyone that he is a big shot, but he could hardly sit down.
On Monday, Julius and his friends got their first hiding. It was, however, not the principal who was doing the thrashing – it was ordinary South Africans who demonstrated that they will no longer tolerate the EFF’s antics.
Nothing came of the EFF’s attempt to bring the country’s economy to a standstill. On the contrary, informal vendors identified an opportunity to do business and did very well selling, among other things, food, water and cold drinks to the marching protesters.
In stark contrast to the 2021 riots in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, which caused immeasurable economic damage to the country, government was alert and monitored the EFF’s movements – or lack thereof – with full show of law-enforcement strength.
Very little of the #NationalShutdown will remain in people’s memories.
The only image they might remember is where Julius Malema politely helped an old, white man across the street. Or the image of Floyd Shivambo and his entourage being thoroughly winded by the time they reached Eskom’s headquarters, Mega Wattpark, and of Floyd covering more distance next to his Christian Louboutin shoes than in them.
What makes one resentful is that these men could return to their mansions afterwards to soak their tired feet in a bubble bath with a glass of expensive whiskey in their hand. The voting cattle, on the other hand, had to return “home” to a makeshift shack and most probably had to go to bed hungry.
Julius Malema: Hiding number two
And then as if Monday was not bad enough for Julius and the EFF, they received hiding number two in Parliament on Wednesday with their motion of no confidence in the parliamentary Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.
The motion followed the Presidential Protection Unit’s forceful removal of the EFF when they, posters held high, stormed the stage on which President Cyril Ramaphosa was sitting.
Dr Pieter Groenewald, FF Plus leader, pointed out during the debate that the Unit did the right thing, and that it must be noted that the Unit is not tasked with protecting Cyril Ramaphosa, but the president of the country.
The same will be done for the next president. It is not about the person, but the office.
Malema, who clearly lives in some parallel universe, maintained that he is charge of the country and has us all right where he wants us.
But if I look at the pain is his eyes, it seems like he is the one in a tight spot.
Prevention of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill, a dangerous weapon in the hands of the ANC
Parliament adopted the Prevention of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill last week.
When the FF Plus’s Member of Parliament and member of the Justice Committee, Jaco Mulder, expressed his concerns about the Bill during a committee meeting, the Deputy Minister of Justice, John Jeffery, made it out to be racism.
His response was something along these lines: “Mr Mulder is apparently worried about his party’s supporters, who are probably mostly white Afrikaners, seeing as they are frequently involved in racist incidents.”
Seeing as the definitions of hate speech and crimes in the Bill are as expansive as the ocean, and one could land in trouble if you so much as say something that hurts another’s feelings, I think the first one to be charged and brought before the court should be the honourable Minister himself.
His assumption that I am, per definition, a racist because I am white is a gross insult and hurts my feelings.
I must, therefore, also be very careful to call the person who decided to expropriate me of my newly filled 9 kg gas bottle without compensation during load shedding in the wee hours of the morning last Friday names, as he might just hear me and file a criminal complaint because I hurt his feelings.
Fallen victim to crime
With the theft of my gas bottle from my yard last Friday, I too am now a victim of crime. Just for the record, the gas bottle was locked in a metal cage with what I thought was a strong lock.
I assume that I did what most other victims of crime do, I did not report the incident to the police, but simply replaced the gas bottle and put-up sturdier locks.
One cannot help but wonder how accurate the crime statistics really are if so many people, like me, do not report such incidents.
Napoleon Bonaparte, French general and statesmen, said that “There is only one step from the sublime to the ridiculous.”
In just 29 years, the ANC has reduced South Africa from the sublime to the ridiculous.
The only way to save our country is to get rid of the whole lot. There is an opportunity to do so with next year’s general elections.
