The City of Cape Town’s Solid Waste Management Department has received a number of queries about its refuse collection schedule. Some residents have expressed concern that their refuse is being collected at different times of the day, sometimes later than the time that they have become accustomed to having their refuse collected.
The City does not guarantee an exact time for refuse collection on the scheduled day, rather the collection day is scheduled, but the time is dependent on a number of factors. The ability to collect refuse in an area is often dictated by conditions beyond the control of the Solid waste teams collecting refuse, such as traffic disruptions, weather conditions, vehicle breakdowns and the volume and mass of refuse placed out by residents.
Refuse can therefore be collected any time during the course of the scheduled collection day, commencing from as early as 06:00 until as late as 23:00 on the day.
The City apologises for any inconvenience this may cause, but asks residents for their understanding.
The City will be taking delivery of new refuse collection vehicles during the current financial year, which will allow it to replace its ageing fleet, thus improving vehicle reliability. Inconsistencies in collection times may therefore continue city-wide until then. Residents are asked to please continue to place their bins outside on the usual collection day, and to leave them there until they are collected.
The City thanks residents for their patience during this time.
