Cape Town – Travellers from Pretoria wanting to fly to Cape Town will now have another alternative to OR Tambo International.
Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa has announced that commercial flights will be available from Wonderboom Airport to Cape Town International from August this year.
Ramokgopa made the announcement during a State of the City address on Thursday, confirming that three scheduled commercial flights will fly daily from Wonderboom National Airport to Cape Town International.
South African Airways (SAA) and SA Airlink are pegged as the airlines to operate the flights.
Wonderboom airport, initially opened in 1937, is situated about 15km north from Pretoria central with a 1 828m long runway – but does not have International Airport certification.
As yet, no announcements have been made indicating whether flight routes to Skukuza or Durban will be added or how competitive flight prices will be – but the increased air connectivity is expected to boost tourism to the area.
SA Express also recently upped inter-connectivity across South Africa with the announcement that it would be flying from Pilanesburg in the North West to Cape Town and Joburg.
SA Express Flies into the Pilanesberg from OR Tambo International Airport three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and from Cape Town International Airport twice a week on Mondays and Fridays. Return flights from the Pilanesberg to Johannesburg are also on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and to Cape Town on Mondays and Fridays.
