After an influx of exciting proposals and several requests from artists nationwide and internationally, the Cape Town Fringe will extend its deadline for proposals to 10 June to give last-minute entrants a chance to submit their production ideas for consideration.
The Cape Town Fringe (Thursday 22 September until Saturday 8 October 2016) is one of Cape Town’s newest and freshest Festivals. Produced by the same team that presents the National Arts Festival, the Cape Town Fringe is three years young and gives new platforms to theatre, music, jazz, dance, comedy, illusion and more in Cape Town.
The Fringe encourages new, dynamic and experimental work that is also pleasing for audiences and assists in building new audiences for the performing arts. A selection panel will review all proposals received and build the Fringe programme. Says CEO, Tony Lankester; “The business model is one of shared risk between the Fringe and the artist. We build the venues, market the event and sell the tickets; the artist brings their work to the stage. The box office is split with the artist, who gets around 70% of the takings.”
Guest Artistic Director Rob Murray said that he had already received some “inspiring” proposals. “Making choices from what has already come in is going to be a huge challenge for myself and our selection panel. As someone who has produced work at various festivals around the world I know that many artists will appreciate the extra time to sharpen their pencils, source their funding and refine their ideas to submit to us – giving themselves the best possible chance of being selected,” he said.
