22 Firearms Recovered

27 October 2026 by Con Tributor

The City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate has recorded 22 firearm recoveries in its latest operational update, reflecting the sustained efforts of its enforcement services to remove illegal and prohibited weapons from communities affected by violent crime.

The operational results include 19 firearms recorded during the week of 19 to 25 October 2026.

The firearms were recovered through proactive patrols, targeted enforcement interventions, vehicle checks and responses to suspicious activity as well as tip-offs from the public. Officers from the City’s Metropolitan Police Department, Law Enforcement Department, including LEAP, and Traffic Service contributed to these operations.

The recoveries span several areas, including Steenberg, Hanover Park, Delft, Nyanga, Philippi, Atlantis, Milnerton and Bonteheuwel. The weapons reported include handguns, an AK-47 and an R5 rifle, with eight 9mm firearms recovered during operations in Philippi on Thursday, 22 October.

Among the notable incidents:

  • On Thursday evening, 22 October, Metro Police officers patrolling Crossroads in Nyanga arrested a suspect who attempted to flee when approached. Officers recovered a 9mm pistol and two live rounds of ammunition. The suspect was handed over to SAPS in Nyanga.
  • In Bonteheuwel, Metro Police officers apprehended an armed suspect following a pursuit during which the suspect reportedly pointed a firearm at the officers. The suspect was arrested without shots being fired and taken to Bishop Lavis SAPS.
  • On Sunday morning, 25 October, City Traffic officers conducting an enforcement operation in the Capricorn area intercepted a vehicle that attempted to evade the operation. Four suspects were arrested, and a Glock 19 pistol fitted with an extended magazine, together with ammunition, was recovered. The SAPS Flying Squad attended and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
  • In a separate incident in Milnerton, Metro Police officers responding to information about a hijacked vehicle recovered a 7,62mm firearm and ammunition. Two suspects were apprehended, including the driver of the vehicle.

These operational successes come against the backdrop of South Africa’s continuing struggle with firearm-related violence. Firearms remain a major contributor to murders and other serious violent crimes, with devastating consequences for victims, families and communities.

The removal of unlawfully possessed firearms is therefore an important component of crime prevention. It reduces the availability of weapons that could be used in further acts of violence, while creating opportunities for law enforcement agencies to identify offenders and disrupt criminal activity.

The Directorate emphasises that firearm recoveries and arrests are important interventions, but lasting improvements in community safety also depend on effective investigations, successful prosecutions, and sustained efforts to address the drivers of violent crime.

‘Every firearm removed from unlawful circulation represents a meaningful intervention in the effort to protect lives. These recoveries are the result of committed officers, vigilant policing and coordinated action across our enforcement services. We also recognise the important contribution of the South African Police Service. Effective cooperation between municipal enforcement agencies and SAPS is essential, from frontline interventions and arrests through to criminal investigations and the processes required to bring offenders to justice. Our responsibility is to make the fullest possible contribution within our mandate, in support of SAPS and in the interests of safer communities,’ said the City’s Executive Director for Safety and Security, Vincent Botto.

The Directorate acknowledges the dedication and professionalism of the officers involved, particularly those who confronted potentially dangerous situations and exercised sound judgement in effecting arrests.

The City will continue to prioritise visible policing, targeted patrols, intelligence-informed deployments and cooperation with SAPS in communities experiencing high levels of firearm-related violence.  In January 2027, the Safety & Security Directorate will start the process to expand the Safety & Security Investigations Unit with additional detectives effectively working towards the first detective service in local government.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious or criminal activity to SAPS or the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700. Timely and reliable information from communities remains an important contribution to crime prevention.
