Bin It In The Bingo Bin

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has launched the City’s annual Spring Clean Cape Town campaign at a mass clean-up event in Parkwood together with Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management.

As part of the #SpringCleanCT campaign, the City will expand cleaning operations metro-wide going into the busy festive season. Mayor Hill-Lewis is calling on the public to get involved by organising local spring cleans.

The City’s anti-litter mascot Bingo will be touring schools, malls, intersections and more to remind Capetonians to always ‘Bin it in the Bingo bin’. Bingo is modelled on the City’s green litter bins, of which there are several thousand across the city.

A 24-hour toll-free number (0800 110077) is also set up for residents to report illegal dumping tip-offs, with rewards on offer where this leads to arrests.

‘For this term of office, we pledged to strive for a cleaner city we all take pride in, where we pick up litter, clean up communities, and do not sit by and watch our environment decline due to pollution.

‘It has been a joy to drive these annual spring clean campaigns together with so many committed Capetonians.

‘This supports our broader City efforts to expand waste services, with better waste services in informal communities, dozens of new waste traps on all our rivers, a new highway and CBD cleaning unit, and a vlei clean-up programme that is delivering real progress.

‘We call on the public to get involved in #SpringCleanCT 2026: let’s show our civic pride by getting our communities, parks, streets, waterways, and beaches looking sparkling clean this spring,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis.

Alderman Twigg said the annual spring clean campaigns had led to around 200 000 additional bags of litter cleared each year across Cape Town thanks to the collective efforts of Capetonians, the City, civil society, schools, and businesses.

‘For this year’s campaign, we challenge residents to help us break all records – let’s clean our city like never before. The City will also scale-up area cleaning operations ahead of the busy tourism season,’ said Alderman Twigg.
