Memorial to Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier; (1757-1834), the Marquis de La Fayette, or just Lafayette.
Lafayette was a French soldier who served as a major-general in the Continental Army under George Washington, fighting in the Battle of Brandywine, and the Battle of Rhode Island. Back in France he presented a draft of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen to the French Estates-General. During the French Revolution Lafayette was commander-in-chief of the Garde nationale; although he was on the side of the Revolution, he was forced to flee in 1792, returning under Bonaparte, but not participating in his government. In 1815 Lafayette was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, and was a liberal member until his death in 1834.
This statue was designed by Paul Wayland Bartlett (1865-1925). The side of the memorial states states that it was funded by the school children of America in 1908.
