i have always done this in writing if the "gender" of the character/subject is not defined. i used to argue that this was the NORM but my teachers all disagreed (they were all born alone, after all).

as a WE who shared my birth experience with "another", let me assure you that the "gender thing" is MERELY one way of being a non-binary human.
