Funkcje administracyjne pełnił aż do 1959 r.
Obok dzieł Olgi Boznańskiej, Józefa Pankiewicza, Leona Wyczółkowskiego czy Włodzimierza Tetmajera można tu zobaczyć płótna Tadeusza Makowskiego, Jacka Malczewskiego i Wojciecha Weissa. Bogato reprezentowana jest twórczość miejscowych, bocheńskich artystów, m.in. Feliksa Hanusza, Ludwika Stasiaka, Ludwika Nemetza, Klementyny Mien, Stanisława Fischera.

in Bochnia

The Bochnia Museum is situated in a two-wing, late-baroque building, formerly Dominican monastery, and one of the most noteworthy historical monuments in Bochnia. Dominican friars had lived here until the fire in 1751, from which the monastery never really recovered. The monastery was officially liquidated in 1777, and the building taken over by the Austrian salt mine administration. Afterwards, following a thorough restoration, the building served as a seat of the Austrian governor, or starost (1783), and it performed various administrative functions until 1959.
The museum was established in 1959 by Stanisław Fischer (1879-1967), a researcher of history of Bochnia and its region, cultural activist, outstanding collector, the founder and first custodian of the museum, and – since 1975 – its patron. His statue, funded in 1997 by Bochnia’s local authorities, stands by the main entrance to the Museum.
Inside, the gallery of 19th and 20th-century Polish painting features most renowned artists of the period, including Olga Boznańska, Józef Pankiewicz, Leon Wyczółkowski, Włodzimierz Tetmajer, Tadeusz Makowski, Jacek Malczewski and Wojciech Weiss. Well represented are also local artists from Bochnia including Feliks Hanusz, Ludwik Stasiak, Ludwik Nemetz, Klementyna Mien, and Stanisław Fischer.
A highly colourful collection of folk sculpture and painting (from 18th-20th centuries) contains mostly works by artists from Southern Poland. These include works by Jędrzej Wowro from Gorzeń Dolny, Józef Janos from Dębno Podhalańskie, and the famous Nikifor Krynicki (Epifaniusz Drowniak). Paintings on canvas, wood, paper, and glass come from Małopolska, Podhale, Spisz and Śląsk (Silesia). Many valuable objects have featured in Polish folk art exhibitions in Poland and abroad.
It may come as a surprise to find here also a remarkable collection of art of non-European cultures of Africa, Asia, South America and Polynesia: sculptures in olive and sandalwood, in ebony and horn, paintings on silk, beautiful embroidery, as well as lacquer and ivory objects.
A complementation of the museum collection are the Judaica, memento to the numerous Jewish community that once lived in Bochnia and its vicinity, as well as historical archives: maps and plans, photographs and other objects, many of which tell the tale of Bochnia Salt Mine.
