Cape Town’s smart water and off-grid sanitation solutions

29 March 2026 by Con Tributor

Cape Town’s approach to smart water management and innovative sanitation solutions took international spotlight this week as global water experts visited key water and sanitation sites across the metro.

Approximately 50 international delegates participated in a study tour showcasing how the City is applying technology and innovation to strengthen water security and sanitation services. This was part of the second International Smart Water Networks Forum (SWAN)’s interactive workshop, held in partnership with the City of Cape Town from 9 to 11 March 2026.

The SWAN workshop and study tour provided an opportunity for global and local experts, technology providers and municipalities to exchange insights on how digital technologies and innovative sanitation solutions can transform water management in cities facing growing climate and infrastructure pressures.

The study tour included a visit to the OR Tambo Informal Settlement in Khayelitsha where delegates viewed an innovative off-grid sanitation system developed through a partnership between the City, the Water Research Commission (WRC) and the Gates Foundation.

The facility consists of 27 toilets housed in three refurbished 12-metre shipping containers and operates entirely off-grid. The system is powered by solar and wind energy, while wastewater is treated on-site through a compact modular treatment plant and reused for flushing, eliminating the need for bulk sewer connections.

Delegates also travelled to the Steenbras catchment area, where they visited the Steenbras Water Treatment Plant, Steenbras Dam and the Steenbras Aquifer. During the visit, they were briefed on the City’s partnership with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to remove alien vegetation, aimed at restoring the catchment and enhancing water yield.

‘It was great to be able to share the City’s projects on an international platform and exchange knowledge and lessons with others in this industry worldwide. This workshop was particularly relevant as the City prepares to install its first AMI smart water meters in April 2026. These meters will provide residents with more accurate and predictable water and sanitation billing by eliminating the need for estimated readings.

‘Overall, the study tour highlighted how Cape Town is combining traditional water infrastructure with emerging smart technologies to improve resilience and efficiency in water services,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.
