Ajax Cape Town face a test of fortitude to get favourable results from their next four games within 10 days as they endeavour to win their place into the second round of the Nedbank Cup and reinforce their place amongst the top five in the ABSA Premiership.
The Urban Warriors play Amazulu (away, Sunday 11 March), Kaizer Chiefs (away, Wednesday 14 March), Mamelodi Sundowns (home, Saturday 17 March) and Free State Stars (away, Wednesday 21 March)
It comes as no surprise that the CEO of Ajax Cape Town expressed his dissatisfaction at the current state of affairs especially when the Urban Warriors have not played a game since the international week, 27 February – 01 March 2012.
George Comitis said, “I’m very unhappy with the football program of our PSL team. We play four games in the next 10 days after a two week break.
It’s ridiculous that we play our Nedbank Cup game in Durban just days before we have to play Chiefs in Johannesburg, then we have to return to Cape Town to play Mamelodi Sundowns three days later, we then have to travel to play Free State Stars in Phuthaditjhaba, that’s a four hour drive from the nearest airport in Bloemfontein.
In my opinion the Cup games should be scheduled over the same period to ensure that everybody play their games over the same weekend. We could even have played our Nedbank game this Wednesday.
Should we progress to the second round of the Nedbank Cup we could be faced with the prospect of playing another four games in 10 days, between March, 28 to April 07, 2012?
The schedule reads; 28 March, Ajax Cape Town vs Amazulu, Cape Town Stadium, 31 Mar – 1 Apr 2012 – Nedbank Cup last 16; 04 April, Jomo Cosmos vs Ajax Cape Town, Sinaba Stadium; 07 April, Ajax Cape Town vs Moroka Swallows, Cape Town Stadium and 11 – 15 April 2012, Nedbank Cup Quarter Finals.
Surely a review of the match schedule would have ensured that there are enough rest days between fixtures to ensure that all teams perform at their highest level.”
