Designer Airtream Headed for Old MacDaddy

4 November 2011 by Alan

The latest Airstream to be acquired by the Daddy group is currently being transformed at a live design installation taking place at the Cape Quarter Design Now! event at the Cape Quarter Lifestyle Village until Saturday,  November 5, 2011. On completion, this Bambi Airstream will head for home, amongst the twelve gleaming Airstreams based at the Old Mac Daddy Luxury Trailer Park in Elgin.

Known for their quirky take on hotel décor and their recent 2011 Gold Loerie Award win in the Three Dimensional and Environmental Design Category, the Old Mac Daddy team, under the creative direction of leading interior stylist, Tracy Lynch, challenged an up-and-coming designer to refurbish the interior of the new Airstream in a way that has not been done before.

The brief was to refurbish a trailer in a manner suitable for camping, a feat yet to be achieved with a Daddy Group trailer.

The designer selected was Aaron Kearney. Born in Northern Ireland, Kearney was drawn to the world of woodwork and design from a very young age, influenced greatly by his grandfather.  He went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts (honours) degree from Central Saint Martins in London and now at 27, lives and works in Cape Town. Kearney has exhibited in Ireland, England and South Africa, most recently for the 2011 Holden Manz Collection in Franschhoek.

In line with ‘functionality’ as the theme, and with little space to play with, Kearney’s design is simple yet modern. Dual-purpose furniture and features, a neutral colour theme, LED lighting and running water will allow for optimal use of the 3.8m x 2.2m x 2m space.

“We are excited about adding another Airstream to the Old Mac Daddy Luxury Trailer Park. The addition has come at a very prevalent time, when creativity is on the rise in Cape Town and South Africa as a whole. We are pleased to have Aaron Kearney as part of the Old Mac Daddy family and we have no doubt that the transformation will add a new dimension, with this particular trailer being a fully functional one.

As the Daddy Group, we want visitors to enjoy a South African experience like no other and with another gleaming Airstream to add to the existing family of twelve, it doesn’t get better than this!” says Daddy Long Legs Group Director, Jody Aufrichtig.

Visitors can watch the transformation outside the Designer Nature Pop-Up Gallery at the Cape Quarter Design Now! event between 09h30 – 18h00 daily, until  November 5. For more information on Aaron Kearney visit www.aaronkearneydesigns.com.
