Mark Mfikoe from the Electrical Contractors Association South Africa (ECASA) confirms that the association – which is the largest employer representative body in the industry – is aware of rogue and unqualified inverter installers claiming to be qualified electricians whilst ripping off unsuspecting homeowners.
As it stands:
- Only registered electricians may do Photovoltaic installations and maintenance. i.e. Solar Panels, Inverters and back up batteries.
- Only registered Master and Installation Electricians may do and sign this work off with a Certificate of Competency.
- Using an unregistered person puts your and neighbours homes and lives at risk.
- Government issues a registration card to bona fide electricians and consumers must verify that independently.
- ECA SA Members are vetted and registrations are checked – ECA members can be verified on the ECA’s public facing web site.
- In some areas installations require application and approval for the installation to proceed and that infers that installers are properly registered and qualified.
- Government lacks the institutional capacity to police.
- These criminals play into people’s overriding desire to only buy the cheapest product.
- There are also training organisations that claim to train people to install solar power that are not registered and accredited with QCTO
- INSIST on evidence of qualification and registration – in doubt contact the ECA for advice.
