Up and coming rugby stars of tomorrow will be in action when school rugby teams from the Eastern and Western Cape compete for honours in a two-day festival to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the founding of Muir College in Kariega / Uitenhage.
There will be 56 teams from 23 schools playing 30 games between them on Saturday, August 6 and Monday, August 8, according to Muir College head of sport Gert van Wyk.
Highlights will include the first match between the Grey and Muir first teams in a number of years, and a demonstration match between the South African Legends and “the Old Muirite Legends”.
It will be a fun game, says former EP rugby player and manager of the Old Muirite Legends team Robert Blignaut.
Former Springbok Garth Wright will be in the team, as will Blignaut, with 136 first-class games to his name and former Cheetahs and Eastern Province Kings player Darron Nell, who is currently the Grey High School coach.
“There are also a lot of former Craven Week players in the team,” he adds.
Rugby legends have no age limit – the oldest player will be 70-year-old Harry Sharp, who says “age is only a number”.
Wright will captain the team.
In addition to the first team clash, there will be six other matches between Muir and Grey teams, including the under 14s, under 15s and under 16s.
Top rugby schools from outside the Nelson Mandela Bay metro that will be participating include Selborne from East London, Dale College from King Williamstown, Graeme College from Grahamstown / Makhanda and Paarl Boys from Paarl in the Western Cape.
The festival will be preceded by a SA Rugby Legends coaching clinic for Kariega schools on the Friday from 15:00.
Matches will be televised on SuperSport, and the festival is open to the public.
There will be food vans and refreshments available on the fields, as well as helicopter flips over the town.
