Flags and vuvuzelas mark World Cup day


Staff members from the Department of Student Affairs celebrate Bafana Bafana’s victory in the mini World Cup.		Meanwhile, children at the Educare Center had their own mini tournament in support of the national team ahead of their quest to conquer the world.

The soccer wasn’t always pretty and the skills of certain teams were suspect, but at least Bafana Bafana won the World Cup. Or so it came to be when the Department of Student Affairs hosted its own World Cup that brought excitement, jubilation and splashing of national colours around Kopano soccer field on 9 June.

Teams from the four clusters that make up the department represented four of the six African countries that are taking part in the first FIFA World Cup on African soil.

Student Development donned Bafana Bafana colours, Student Wellness Service & Disability Service represented Ghana, Student Housing & Residence Life was Algeria, and Student Funding & Administration flew Cote D’ivoire colours.

Student Affairs executive director, Moonira Khan, said the competition was the initiative of the department’s Transformation Committee to support the national team ahead of their quest to conquer the world, and as a team-building exercise for the department.

“We want to show our support for Bafana and enhance the role of soccer (to unify people) at UCT,” Khan explained.

Other World Cup celebrations around UCT included those of the Development and Alumni Department, and a mini tournament hosted by the Educare Centre in conjunction with the Holiday Care.
