Increase in False Bay Shark Sightings

12 January 2010 by CapeTownNewsReader

Shark Spotters are urging surfers and bathers to continue to leave the water when requested to do so by the shark spotters when they sound their siren alarms warning of shark sightings near to bathing and surfing areas.

A recent increase in shark sightings, close in-shore on the False Bay Coast, particularly between Sunrise Beach and Fish Hoek, has seen an increase in requests by the shark spotters for bathers and surfers to leave the water until the danger passes.

It is feared that the increase in these alarms may eventually result in some complacency by bathers and surfers who may decide not to leave the water and this may increase the risk of a shark encounter.

While no incidents have occurred the shark spotters are urging bathers to continue to calmly leave the water when they sound their sirens when sharks are spotted in the vicinity of surfing and bathing areas.

The increased shark activity, close in-shore, appears to be normal of the sharks hunting and feeding behaviour along this stretch of coastline.
