#KnowWhatYouEat on World Fisheries Day – Saturday, 21 Nov
Impassioned champion of ethically sourced and traceable fish, Steenberg Executive Chef Kerry Kilpin encourages her guests to #KnowWhatYouEat every day of the week, especially on World Fisheries Day this Saturday, 21 November.
As the first chef to partner with ABALOBI over two years ago, Chef Kerry is fully committed to this non-profit, small-scale fisher initiative that directly supplies chefs with premium quality fish which is ecologically responsible and socially fair. Motivated by the need to protect fish resources for future generations, Chef Kerry works directly with the fisherfolk using the ABALOBI app to supply her with their daily catch.
Guests dining at Steenberg’s beloved Bistro Sixteen82 and signature restaurant, Tryn, are able to track the journey and follow the story of every fish ‘from hook to cook’ including where and by whom it was caught by scanning a QR code at their table.
Chef Kerry’s signature brand of fresh ingredients and exciting twists and flavours can turn the most readily available fish into culinary masterpieces. From grilled line fish drizzled with her signature sauces, to pickled fish and tapas, guests are spoilt for choice at these stylish and popular eateries.
Restaurants partnering with the ABALOBI app provide numerous fishing communities on the western and southern Cape coast with a better price for their fish and livelihood for their families. By purchasing ‘storied’ seafood and serving the right fish, caught by the right fisher, Steenberg is able to contribute to the grassroots economy of these communities and assist with the rebuilding of sustainable fisheries.
World Fisheries Day is held annually and highlights the critical importance of maintaining and sustaining fish sources around the globe, the economic and ecological challenges facing the fishing industry, and the implications for marine and human life.
