Riaan Manser and Dan Skinstad had a tough time of it paddling through the East Coast waters of Iceland last week. Their kayak was destabilized by rough seas and gale force winds throwing both of them into icy waters. While their kayak might have taken a knock during the ordeal, their spirits and drive certainly did not. They have now doubled their efforts by paddling twice a day, managing an average distance of 60 kilometres a day. Their latest mission is to complete the last leg of the South East coast before heading South.
“The motivation driving Dan and Riaan is palpable. One can only admire the fact that they have had all types of setbacks thrown their way, but remain steadfast in their goal to complete this expedition. Their enthusiasm and excitement for the remainder of their expedition continues to inspire us back home,” comments Mark von Bentheim, marketing manager of the Windhoek trademark in South Africa.
Riaan noted that through all the difficulties they have experienced, it would be easy to forget how momentous their journey actually is. He comments: “I cannot remind myself enough of how much of a privilege it is to be here in Iceland which would not have happened without the support of Windhoek.”
The team can hardly contain their excitement for their imminent sighting of the Vatnajokull glacier located in the South East of Iceland. Vatanajokull is the biggest glacier in Europe and boasts a glacial lagoon full of icebergs. The place is renowned for being one of the most beautiful locations in the world.
