Dear Editor
In a motion adopted on 10 August, the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) officially recognised the efforts of the DA-led Western Cape “for demonstrating firm leadership” in ensuring the financial stability of the province’s municipalities.
The motion was in response to recent reports from Ratings Afrika and the Auditor-General which found that municipalities in the Western Cape has massively outperformed municipalities in other parts of the country by netting more than half of all the clean audits awarded.
In response to these results, I moved for a debate in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament on the state of the Province’s municipalities, which will take place later today. The debate will see several speakers, including Local Government Minister Anton Bredell, explain the Western Cape Government’s approach to municipal development.
MPP Derrick America said: “I am honoured that the NCOP has commended the efforts of the DA-led Western Cape Government in preserving municipal financial stability, and I am exceptionally excited to debate the issue. This debate will allow us to clearly articulate the many initiatives which the Western Cape Government has undertaken to ensure municipalities in this province continue to provide dignity to their residents.”
