Old Mac Daddy Strikes Gold

19 September 2011 by Alan

Creative hotel brand, Daddy’s World, has added another accolade to their cabinet of treasures by winning a Gold Loerie at the 2011 Loerie Awards, hosted in Cape Town on Sunday, 18 September 2011.

Old Mac Daddy was awarded the Gold Loerie in the Three Dimensional and Environmental Design Category – Interior Design Temporary Structures, against stiff competition from projects by Joe Public and The Jupiter Drawing Room.

Old Mac Daddy owner, and the vision behind the project, Jody Aufrichtig, said he was bowled over by the win; “I was shocked when they announced our name! It’s such an honour to win something at The Loeries, let alone taking home a Gold! Old Mac Daddy was a project of such passion, and intensity, with huge challenges for all that were involved in it. I would like to commend the incredible team of artists and creatives that were integral to the process. I am also glad that this award brings attention to the fact that a hotel in a rural setting can achieve national recognition for design. We hope that this contributes to good recognition for Elgin and the Overberg area as a whole too.”

The Loeries are South Africa’s best known creative awards, commending work in the design, visual, spatial and communication arts. Cape Town agencies featured particularly well in 2011, taking home the lion’s share of the awards.

Daddy’s World is currently commissioning the redesign of another showcase Airstream as part of the Cape Quarter’s Design Now! celebration. The Airstream will be redesigned and refurbished as a live installation between 27th October and 5th November 2011.

Aufrichtig said he was proud to have bridged the gap between hospitality and creativity; “The hospitality industry is a key employment driver in the Cape and particularly in the Elgin/Grabouw area where there are staggering unemployment figures. We built Old Mac Daddy first and foremost for our guests to enjoy and be inspired by but the fact that it employs people and contributes to an upgrade of skills in the region is a contribution that we are really very happy with.”

The Airstream Trailer Park idea was originally inspired by a natural rural setting, so when The Daddy Long Legs Group discovered a little piece of heaven on a private farm in the apple-growing Elgin Valley, they went to work immediately. The Old Mac Daddy Park is the nostalgic camping holiday of childhood with added luxurious touches, designer trailer suites, slopes of whispering pines, lakes, endless nature-inspired activity, wholesome farm-grown food and all of this just a 40 minute drive from the Cape Town CBD.

The park consists of ten trailer suites with a separate lounge, viewing deck and en-suite bathroom. Each unit will accommodate two adults in the trailer and the lounge doubles up as a kiddies room. Another two Airstream trailers overlook the bottom dam and will accommodate two adults. Whilst these trailers are a little smaller, they are still en-suite and make the perfect nest for romantic couples or those wanting to contemplate life from a serene perspective. Daddy’s Villa, is a three bedroom forest cabin for larger families and wedding parties.

Old Mac Daddy has a communal area where guests can enjoy healthy, wholesome meals and treats throughout the day. All the ingredients used in the food are locally sourced, organic and free range wherever possible. A child friendly environment, kids will have an indoor-outdoor play area with daily activities and there is a full kids menu for children under eight years to choose meals from. These meals are free. A fenced in swimming pool keeps temperatures down and adventurous, and unsupervised little people out.

A brilliant venue for conferences, meetings, pow-wows, celebrations and weddings, The Old Mac Daddy can be rented entirely for functions or partially for meetings. A boardroom and conference area is located on the property. Wireless broadband is available for those needing to get some work done.
