Residents once again have had to endure more disruptions to their day-to-day life after Eskom announced that Stage 6 rolling blackouts would be instituted this week – adding to already record supply constraints felt this year.
With these disruptions affecting everyday socio-economic activities, many industries have experienced losses and pressures that should have previously been prevented. This is no exception to the healthcare sector.
Even though all public hospitals are required to have backup power supply facilities, I will be submitting written questions to the provincial Department to enquire about its mitigative plans in place as well as the cost it has incurred thus far from load shedding this year.
MPP Wendy Kaizer-Philander says: “For a healthcare facility to operate effectively, it requires a constant supply of electricity in order for it to carry out its functions. There are many critical areas in hospitals providing essential services which cannot have the risk of having their power disrupted – upon which lives quite literally rely.
In the Western Cape we know that the provincial Department of Health and Wellness’ good governance has resulted in many hospitals being spared from rolling blackouts. In places where generators are installed, the fuel levels have been increased so that there will be power for longer periods. This means that quality healthcare can continue without interruption.”
